A picture, gesture, or spoken word can carry a meaningful choice. A child might choose photographs of comfortable places, point to an unwanted activity, or show how they ask for a pause. T ake these contributions seriously without assuming that one choice is permanent. Ask again when circumstances change. The map belongs to an evolving person, not a fixed category. For example, a child who dressed easily yesterday may need help today after poor sleep and a change of plans. The parent can offer familiar clothes and help with the first step, then observe what happens. “You did it yesterday” does not explain what is difficult now. The map should help adults respond more accurately, not provide evidence for an argument. Put the chapter into practice Complete the sentence “This activity is easier for my child when…” with three specific observations. Share one with a caregiver and ask what they notice. Keep the child's preferences alongside adult observations, and update the page when new information changes your understanding. Chapter 3: Communication Beyond Speech Communication includes asking, refusing, commenting, joking, sharing an interest, and seeking connection. It can happen through speech, movement, pictures, writing, or a device. The goal is for the child to have a reliable way to influence what happens and to be understood. 9. Seek medical advice for persistent sleep difficulty, significant snoring, breathing concerns, pain, or marked daytime tiredness. Do not start or change medication or supplements without appropriate clinical guidance. Include the adults' safety in the discussion: severe sleep loss can affect driving and caregiving. A plan that nobody in the household can sustain needs to be reconsidered, not enforced with increasing frustration. 27. Making clothing, washing, and dental care more manageable Find the specific difficult step. A twisted sock, seam, wet sleeve, toothpaste flavor, or sudden water on the face may matter more than the task's name suggests. Offer familiar clothing and practical choices. For a special event, comfort and participation matter more than an outfit that looks right in a photograph. Explain before touching or introducing a tool. Prepare the towel, show the next step, and provide a usable pause signal. Necessary care should not depend on surprising the child. If an activity remains painful or highly distressing, work with the relevant professional on an adapted approach. For dental care, seek advice from the child's dentist about suitable equipment, toothpaste, and an effective routine. New resistance can reflect dental pain and should not be treated only as a behavior problem. A short successful practice step may help preparation, but it does not replace needed

Outing Plan Check the practical arrangements before leaving. An exit is a support option, not a threat. Purpose and timing Destination, expected duration, and the child’s view. What is known People, waiting, food, toilets, access, and information still to confirm. Likely demands Noise, travel, clothing, uncertainty, or other relevant factors. Support and pause Items kept accessible, pause signal, and a suitable place. Exit responsibilities Who accompanies the child, who has essential items, and transport home. Afterward Recovery arrangements; one thing to keep and one thing to change. Meal Observation This record describes a meal; it does not assess nutrition or swallowing. Seek professional advice for health concerns instead of using exposure as a substitute for assessment. Date and meal Setting, food offered, and familiar foods available. Comfort and access Seating, utensils, smell, sound, temperature, or other relevant details. Child’s communication What the child indicated, accepted, declined, or asked for. What happened Describe without a success/failure score or pressure to taste. Health concerns Pain, coughing, choking, vomiting, constipation, or other concerns to report. Next step A practical adjustment or a question for the appropriate professional. 34
